Photographing The Universe
It was the reigning Miss Universe's night of memories. Brook Lee's Paina Hoomaikai, her aloha farewell party, was on Monday, April 27, 1998 at the Hilton Hawaiian Villiage Coral Ballroom. About 500 people turned out to wish her aloha and to celebrate Brook's year as Miss Universe 1997.
Among them were many of the delegates to the upcoming Miss Universe 1998 pageant. It was a great evening for getting quality photographs of subjects from literally around the world. Here they flash the "Shaka" sign, Hawaii's salute of greeting, universal friendship and joy. This was a Nikkor 28-85mm f3.5-4.5 AIS at f5.6, Nikon N90s 1/250, Fuji Reala 100, SB-26 flash at f5.6 TTL.

Brook was having a fabulous time taking pictures with everyone there. Here, Brook poses with Jewel May Lobaton, Miss Phillipines Universe 1998 and her chaperone. This was also the 28-85mm AIS. |

Nana Okumura, Miss Japan Universe 1998 was gracious enough to pose for this photo.
This is the 85mm f1.8D at f5.6.
The rest of the settings were the same as above.
The scanning and compression process reveals most of the sharpness,
but it looks much better in the original photograph.

Joyce Giraud, Miss Puerto Rico Universe 1998 was a favorite with the crowd. |

| Here's a sneak preview of the Miss Universe stage set. It's a sophisticated stage, featuring a revolving turntable on the stage, five screens for rear-screen slide projection, ten video cameras including two on boom jigs, four carbon arc spotlights on platforms suspended above the audience, synchronized motorized lights and a professional sound system. Brook Lee is up on stage while adjustments are being made. This photo was made with an Olympus Infinity Stylus Epic, 35mm f2.8, non-red eye flash, Fuji Super G 200 film. |

And a quick view of the stage area during the dress rehearsal with the delegates and a view in the background of Kalalaau Valley on the west end of Kauai. Is the show going to be spectactular? You bet! |
