30th Class Reunion

September 19, 2007

If you missed the 30th Class Reunion at the Hawaii Prince Hotel, here's a photo essay by Catherine Toth and Andrew Shimabuku of the Honolulu Advertiser.

Dear Classmates,

I'd like to thank the committee and the staff at the Hawaii Prince Hotel for putting on such a fine event. Being consumed with running the event, I didn't have the chance to preview all that was happening. Many thanks to Sue Saffery for her contribution to this report.

The Kaimuki High School Class of 1975 30th Reunion celebration on Saturday, July 9th was a blast. From a class size of around 630 graduates, about 83 classmates and 104 total attended the event. Many of you have already thanked the committee for a grand time. A number mentioned that although you were hesitant on coming, that you really had a good time. Even the photographer who was hired for the evening said he had a good time!

The event was advertised in The Honolulu Star Bulletin, the Honolulu Advertiser, the websites of kaimukihsfoundation.org, kaimukialumni.com, and classmates.com. The Reunion Committee consisted of Ron Hashiro, Winifred Tenno, Debra Ambrose-Cabral, Chester Wong, Sue Saffery, Raenette Auyong and Garret Fujita. We held periodic dinner meetings at the Kahala Zippy's and held our final meeting to learn the Electric Slide. Debra was a key person given the number of people she sees at Columbia Inn, and Garret did yeoman's duty calling up a number of people in the waning days of the signup period and letting them of event.

The doors opened at 6:00 pm with music provided by Creation of Sounds. People mingled and got caught up with lost time. Classmates were consumed filling in the blanks on the trivia game about the classmates. At 6:40, we were welcomed, and with an invocation, started the dinner buffet.

Out of town guests included: Janice Edgerton, Florine Fujita, Davina Kamalani, Lehua Kawewehi, Gene Smith. And of all our off-island classmates, we were most surprised that the one who traveled the furthest was Francis Tuitele, from American Samoa. He happened to be in town with the football team he coaches and popped in to catch up with his Kaimuki High buddies. At the door, he mentioned that he didn't think "we" could be his classmates! Did we look that old to him?!

We had a moment of silence in remembrance of our nine classmates and our class advisor, Mrs. Lorraine Shiroma, who are no longer with us. Since the last reunion, we lost Kevin Ebata, Ruth Kuwaye and Gary Yoshimura.

We took group photos under the direction of Kevin Bogan of PictureMan of Hawaii. Kevin also worked the group all night, taking candid shots.

There was a Karaoke Kontest with five contestants -- I recall David Nash, Davina Kamalani. Sorry, but I couldn't recall the other three singers.

The group was treated to a special musical presentation dedicated to Raenette Auyong. The winner of the trivia game was announced -- it was Sheri Tamayose. One of the featured trivia was the person who was married at least 25 years -- Aimee Nakasone. Approximately 60 door prizes were awarded throughout the night. Congratulations to the winners.

Music was provided by Billy Gomban of Creation of Sounds. Most of our classmates joined the reunion committee on the dance floor and learned the Electric Slide and the Macarena. The night continued with more dancing and catching up.

We closed the night with the final Electric Slide and all joined hands as we sang "Hawaii Aloha" and the Alma Mater. The group trickled out from 10:15 to 10:30, and we called it a night until next time.

If any of you took photos, I could use some to forward to the Kaimuki Alumni websites to be posted. I barely had time to bring out the camera for just a handful of photos. Please feel free to e-mail me.

Geri Galariada passed away on June 1, 2006. She was the first person to register for our 30th reunion, and had a good time seeing old friends.
